Kim Kardashian’s ‘Santa Baby’ cover sparks backlash

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to controversy, but her latest venture into music has left fans scratching their heads.

KIM KARDASHIAN’S COVER

The reality TV star released a sultry cover of Santa Baby. She did this alongside a bizarre short film on her Instagram account. The film was directed by Nadia Lee Cohen and Charlie Denis.

While some applauded her creative effort, many found the visuals unsettling and the project tone-deaf, according to the Express Tribune.

The short film, which debuted on 23 December, shows Kardashian crawling through various rooms in an eccentric house.

KIM KARDASHIAN CRAWLS AROUND A WEIRD CHRISTMAS

Each room features a strange scene. There are nuns sitting stoically, a grandmother watching TV, men gambling, and even a cameo by Macaulay Culkin, according to Daily Mail.

Culkin is famously known for his role in Home Alone.

The combination of eerie imagery and the playful Christmas classic left fans divided.

Instagram user @itscoonie commented, “I am so confused. Kim, what are you doing?”

Others were harsher in their critique. User @alatheia said, “What in the methamphetamine Christmas blasphemy is this?”

Meanwhile, @karar0s3 added, “I’m a really weird girl, and I’m trying to find the art in this, but I am grasping.”

FANS REACT TO KIM KARDASHIAN’S VIDEO

The responses highlighted how far the project strayed from traditional holiday cheer.

Some fans also criticised the short film for being out of touch with the spirit of Christmas, according to Today.

User @imgenezys said, “I thought you are Christian, Kim, and this video is blasphemous. Smh!” Another user, @kyg23, remarked, “This left me feeling quite uncomfortable.

It seems to highlight many issues often criticised about Hollywood, and it comes across as undermining the true meaning of Christmas.”

However, not everyone was ready to dismiss Kardashian’s efforts.

BENEFIT OF A DOUBT

Instagram user @moesha.masamba showed some support.

“I love Kim, so I’d really want to hear what her explanation of the meaning of this is before I judge it.” This comment reflects curiosity about the artistic intent behind the project.

Kardashian’s decision to venture into singing has also raised eyebrows.

Known primarily as a business mogul, model, and reality TV star, her pivot into music seems like a bold, albeit risky, move.

KIM KARDASHIAN’S SKILLS

While her businesses in beauty and fashion have thrived, fans are sceptical about her success as a singer.

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” wrote @the.retired.millennial, echoing the sentiments of many.

The release timing of the project, just before Christmas, suggests that it intended to be a festive treat.

However, for many viewers, it felt more like a surreal experiment gone wrong.

THE DARK SIDE OF HOLLYWOOD

Its eccentric style and provocative imagery sparked comparisons to Hollywood’s darker side. Some questioned if it was meant to parody or critique industry norms.

For South African fans, Kardashian’s project may feel even more alien.

Christmas in South Africa is about summer barbecues, vibrant outdoor gatherings, and a relaxed holiday spirit.

The cold, eerie visuals in Kardashian’s film clash with this warm, celebratory vibe.

KIM KARDASHIAN AND TAKING RISKS

One can’t help but wonder if her team considered how such global audiences might perceive the work.

Despite the backlash, Kardashian’s name remains a powerful brand.

Her ability to spark conversations, whether positive or negative, ensures she stays relevant. Perhaps that was the ultimate goal of this unconventional Christmas venture.

Kardashian’s Santa Baby experiment shows she’s willing to take risks.

Whether fans will embrace this bold move or write it off as a misstep remains to be seen.
