Kaizer Chiefs’ transfer plans, as we look at who’s in and who’s out in the next window.
Chiefs made headlines in January by securing three new signings, Tashreeq Morris, Thabo Cele, and Makabi Lilepo. With these additions, the Soweto giants are already making strategic moves ahead of the upcoming transfer window. But what do these signings mean for Chiefs’ long-term plans?
Defensive reinforcements on the horizon
Despite strengthening in key areas, Chiefs opted not to bolster their defense in January. That decision will likely change in the off-season.
A key priority remains the left-back position. Chiefs aggressively pursued Simba SC’s Mohammed Husseini but failed to close the deal. However, the club is expected to reignite its interest in Fawaaz Basadien, as Stellenbosch FC will have time to find his replacement.
Central defense is another concern. With Zitha Kwinika’s contract expiring, the club is unlikely to retain him, making a defensive signing a necessity.
Chiefs midfield stability after Cele
The signing of Thabo Cele gives Amakhosi much-needed depth in midfield, reducing the urgency for further reinforcements in that area. The return of Edson Castillo from injury further strengthens the squad. Meanwhile, Samkelo Zwane is expected to learn from Cele, while Yusuf Maart, George Matlou, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, and Sibongiseni Mthethwa add to the options in midfield.
Lilepo’s impact and further attack targets
Makabi Lilepo’s arrival signals head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s preference for traditional wingers who stretch the pitch rather than cut inside. Previously, Nabi relied on Wandile Duba in a wide role, but with Lilepo’s versatility—able to play as both a winger and a center forward—Chiefs may still look for further reinforcements on the flanks.
Striker recruitment remains a priority, even after securing Morris. Nabi favors big center forwards as target men, and with Ranga Chivaviro struggling and his contract set to expire on June 30, Chiefs are likely to bring in new firepower. Among their top targets is Young Africans striker Clement Mzize, who has a history with Nabi and Cedric Kaze at Yanga.
Chiefs goalkeeping shake-up on the cards?
Defensive frailties have been a major concern for Chiefs, with clean sheets hard to come by this season. Although Bruce Bvuma has stabilized the No. 1 spot after Fiacre Ntwari’s shaky performances, Chiefs are still in the market for a top-quality shot-stopper.
A major move is already in motion. Chiefs have proposed a swap deal with Chippa United for Nigeria’s No. 1 goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, with Ntwari potentially going the other way.
With major squad restructuring on the horizon, Chiefs are poised for a busy off-season. Defensive reinforcements, further attacking options, and a new goalkeeper remain at the top of the priority list. Fans can expect more ambitious moves as the club aims to restore its dominance in South African football.
