Kaizer Chiefs slayer Manqoba Mngqithi an Orlando Pirates option?

Orlando Pirates are on the lookout for a new coach at the end of the season with Jose Riveiro departing.

Pirates will be looking to have a coach of high calibre after the success Riveiro has had during his time.

Pirates looking for Riveiro replacement

During his tenure so far, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, his side is still in it with a chance of making it three Nedbank Cup titles in a row as well, this season. Beyond that, he is currently leading the Buccaneers into second place in the Betway Premiership as it stands. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten.

As the team search for a candidate to help them build on from that foundation, a familiar name has arose. According to Soccer-Laduma, experienced former Mamelodi Sundowns and now Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi may be a candidate.

Mngqithi an option?

“The decision to sign a contract until the end of the season gave Mngqithi an opportunity to return to coaching before he can properly assess his options come the end of the campaign. And with doors opening at clubs such as SuperSport United, Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates, Mngqithi is expected to meet up with his representatives to see where he can go next season. Indications are that the coach is determined to work for a club that has ambitions of qualifying for continental competitions and, having coached in the Champions League with Sundowns, he believes he has the experience to do well at that level.” Said the source.

Mngqithi achieved a lot of success both locally and continentally with Sundowns as both coach and assistant coach. That could prove appealing to Pirates who are looking to emulate that path. Furthermore, he has a knack for beating Chiefs, having never lost against them as a co-coach or coach of the Brazilians. That would sound like music to the ears of the Buccaneers.
