Kaizer Chiefs given golden opportunity to sign Bafana midfielder

Kaizer Chiefs are hoping to sign several players this summer.

One of them could be Bafana Bafana’s Elias Mokwana, who recently terminated his contract with Tunisian side Espérance following a breach of contract – in other words, they weren’t paying him.

Adding to this speculation is that Chiefs tried to sign Mokwana three months ago, but Polokwane’s Sekhukhune United rejected their offer, leaving the door open for Espérance, who was happy to match the asking price.

Kaizer Chiefs are also linked with Bongani Zungu, another free agent on the market, and could be forced to pick between the two – Mokwana, 25, is seven years younger which could sway Nasreddine Nabi and his team to opt for the dynamic playmaker.

Mokwana’s agent speaks

Confirming the reports of Espérance’s breach of contract was Mokwana’s attorney, Kabelo Mashigo: “Much of the issues are confidential,” he told SABC Sports’ Mazola Molefe.

Before adding that he “can confirm that the club is in breach of the agreement. We provided them with notice to rectify the breach. They have not complied, leaving the player with no option but to accept the repudiation. Elias is focusing on the call-up now and once that is done, we will consider the next step.”

Zungu another option?

As mentioned, Zungu is another player on the Kaizer Chiefs raider with Soccer Laduma reporting that “It’s true there has been interest in Bongani Zungu by Kaizer Chiefs, but there be a lot that has to change at Chiefs for them to then actually sign Zungu.”

“They are first looking at loaning out some players in that position like Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa or Samkelo Zwane and then if something happens in that respect, then the club will be able to sign Zungu.

“So, at the moment, it all depends on if Kaizer Chiefs can create space that can accommodate the signing of a new midfielder like Zungu. So, as much as they are interested in Zungu because of his experience, they are looking at how that could happen if they are to go ahead with signing Zungu.”
