The African National Congress (ANC) National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal has upheld the decision to expel its former president, Jacob Zuma.

Earlier this year, the ANC charged and suspended Zuma for contravening the party’s rules when he launched the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party [which he currently leads] on 16 December 2023 in Orlando, Soweto. His disciplinary hearing was held virtually in July where he was represented by ANC outcast Tony Yengeni.

The South African previously reported that the NDC found Zuma “guilty of contravening Rule 25 of the ANC constitution for prejudicing the integrity or repute of the organisation by acting in collaboration with a registered political party, to wit the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, which is not in alliance with the ANC, in a manner contrary to the aims, policies, and objectives of the ANC.”

ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the national disciplinary committee of appeal’s decision reaffirms the party’s commitment to revolutionary morality, revolutionary discipline, and democratic centralism.

Bhengu-Motsiri said discipline is a core foundation of the ANC, however, Zuma’s behaviour exemplifies the highest form of ill-discipline and a direct assault on the historical mission of the ANC.

“By establishing and leading a rival political party, he abandoned the core values of organisational loyalty and collective accountability, converting himself into a tool for destabilisation,” she said.

Further, Bhengu-Motsiri said as a former president of the ANC, Zuma was expected to embody the highest standard of disciplined leadership and advanced comrades who serve as guides and inspiration for all party members and society at large.

“This severe breach of our organisational foundation necessitated his expulsion from the party to safeguard the ANC’s integrity and ensure that the unity of the organisation remains in form and content,” she added.
