Kaizer Chiefs have explored deals for former Sundowns players and current ones on the fringe of the first team. Is it a good idea?
Sirino has started well for Kaizer Chiefs, but…
33-year-old Gaston Sirino has undoubted quality, technical skill and pedigree. He’s also started his Kaizer Chiefs career well, with three assists and a goal in five league appearances this season. It’s unlikely he’ll keep that level of productivity up though, and there’s also the ever-present risk of injury. It’s not exactly a controversial thing to say that Sirino isn’t a long-term option for Chiefs. So why, if he wasn’t good enough for Sundowns, is he good enough for the Glamour Boys? He’s certainly in the twilight of his career.
Transfer rumours link Chiefs with ex and current Sundowns players
Remember all of the Andile Jali talk? Whether or not those were just rumours, Chiefs seemed genuinely keen on the vastly experienced midfield general. Jali left Sundowns under a cloud, and since his acrimonious exit from Chloorkop, he’s started well with new club Chippa.
Today’s rumours involve a potential Chiefs raid for talented 28-year-old Downs playmaker Sphelele Mkhulise. This week, Bongani Zungu has dominated the headlines as Amakhosi hover to sign the former Sundowns schemer.
Ben10 is past his prime
Bongani Zungu, nicknamed Ben10, has 29 Bafana Bafana caps and experience across Europe. He’s strutted his stuff in the top tiers of Scotland, France and Portugal with Glasgow Rangers, Amiens and Vitoria Guimaraes. According to transfermarkt, his market value was its highest in January 2018 when he was valued at €3.5m (R67 million). However, it’s been a steady decline since. Would a free transfer make sense for both parties, or is it a disaster waiting to happen?
