Hellmann’s mayonnaise went extinct almost exactly two years ago. It returned to stores at exorbitant prices, but now nature is healing.
Hellmann’s mayonnaise on a huge special at Checkers
Currently, 400g jars of the good stuff sell for R89.99 in Checkers stores around the country. If you’re the owner of one of those cool orange Xtra Savings cards, however, you can cop one of them for R34.99. Obviously, the original price is insane for a product that used to cost less than half, but this current special is a great deal, all things considered. Last week Checkers were selling two jars for the price of one, and I fell into their trap. It’s something I regret seeing as though one can now effectively get two and a quarter jars for the price of one. I won’t go into the calculations there because most of us detested maths at school.
For the sake of comparison, Woolworths sells the 400g jar at the same price as Checkers.
Throwback to the Hellmann’s mayo saga of 2023
In February 2023, I spotted massive 3.57kg tubs of Hellmann’s mayonnaise at a popular deli in Green Point, Cape Town. Conventional large tubs of Hellmann’s mayo previously stocked in stores weighed 789g. To put that number into perspective or context or whatever you want to call it, this massive tub is 4.52 times that size. Or, in more relatable terms, it’s the weight of a pretty average newborn child.
Reference the image below and you’ll see that 400g of Hellmann’s cost R39.99 in the depth of the Karoo just two years ago. Now, it’s double the price when not on special. It’s crazy to think how inflation, fuel costs and scarcity drive prices up to stratospheric levels. Happy Friday!
