Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite has always been a ‘scholar before a baller’.

He is still the last captain to lift a trophy for Amakhosi. Having won the league title with Chiefs in 2015, Mashamaite made a surprise move to BK Hacken in Sweden. He only spent one year overseas before returning to South Africa to join SuperSport United. His stay in Pretoria lasted just a season before signing with Baberwa.

Speaking on The Bettor Podcast with Lorenz Köhle, the former Kaizer Chiefs captain said studied law before switching to BA in Political Science.

“When I left Limpopo, I came through to Wits and registered Bachelor in Arts, initially I registered for Law but because my major goal was to become a professional footballer, after two years, I switched to BA. I majored in International Relations and Political Science and I graduated in 2005. That’s when I gave my mother her degree and pursued my footballing degree,” he added.

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs captain on his greatest achievement

The 41-year-old former footballer represented not just only Chiefs but captain Bidvest Wits in the 2010 Nedbank Cup triumph. He peaked under Stuart Baxter where he went on to win four trophies with the Khosination.

“Captaining Wits, winning the Nedbank Cup in 2010, we were the first team to play at the new (revamped) FNB Stadium, we beat AmaZulu 3-0 in a packed stadium just before the World Cup. Again winning two league titles with Kaizer Chiefs, one as a captain and also going to BK Häcken and winning the title, the first in their history,” Mashamaite said.

Did Tefu’s departure affect Amakhosi in the 2015/16 season?
