Polokwane City midfielder Manuel Kambala has revealed that he once feared for his life after scoring against Kaizer Chiefs in 2020.
While playing for Baroka, the 33-year-old Mozambican star scored a crucial goal on the final day of the campaign denying Amakhosi the league title. The Glamour Boys lost the league to Mamelodi Sundowns on the last day following a 1-1 draw with Baroka.
Kambala reflects on the anger from Kaizer Chiefs fans directed at him
“Hey, the Chiefs fans are very angry with me for scoring that goal (laughing). On social media, some were insulting me like this. Little did I know that my scoring in that game would cause so much anger,” said Kambala on Isolezwe as per GOAL.
“I used to be afraid to even go to the mall (mall), especially in Johannesburg, since I have friends and relatives there for fear that some Chiefs fans might hurt me if they see my face.”
After denying Kaizer Chiefs the league, Kambala played for Baroka for another two years before joining Magesi.
“Things like that happen in football because some fans take things to heart because they love football and their teams, while others spend a lot of money betting. Although it will take time for the Chiefs fans to forget me, but I do not believe that they still hold a grudge against me.”
