‘I don’t know what that is, but many criminals come from the Congo’ – Trump

Donald Trump sparked controversy after implying that dangerous criminals originate not only from South America but also from “the Congo.”

The President of the United States was defending his mass deportation policy when he made a perplexing statement about “the Congo.”

“You know, they released [people from] jails… from all over the world. They released them, not just from South America, but all over the world,” Trump told reporters.

“The Congo in Africa. Many, many people come from the Congo.”

“I don’t know what that is, but they came from the Congo, and all over the world they came in,” Trump added.

The US President faced significant backlash for his comments, with many calling him ignorant.

“Trump’s cluelessness about the Congo is a new low, geography matters when you’re leading a nation,” tweeted @cruiseecho.

This is not the first time Trump has made eyebrow-raising statements about an African country. Earlier this year, the US leader mentioned Lesotho in his address while listing some of the foreign spending he had cut as “appalling waste.”

“Eight million dollars to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho, which nobody has ever heard of,” Trump said then.

Lesotho’s foreign minister said Trump’s remarks were “quite insulting.”

“I’m really shocked that my country can be referred to like that by the head of state,” he told Reuters.
