Former Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa still has love for his former club.
The 27-year-old recently left the Sea Robbers to join AmaZulu. In the past two seasons, Mthethwa has struggled to break into Jose Riveiro’s team with the likes of Thabiso Sesane, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Thapelo Xoki preferred.
Speaking after his exit, the former Orlando Pirates star said he the club to seek minutes elsewhere.
“I can never be fed up with a team that made me, but it was a decision for me that I have a lot to give and to show the country,” Mthethwa said.
“I still want to represent my country and I feel like being outside not playing, was me wasting my time in football.
“I’m 27 right now and years are going by, this is where I am supposed to play, being a regular in a club, so my previous home didn’t give me that opportunity.”
Mthethwa explains why he left Orlando Pirates
“We had a discussion, a mutual agreement to leave, not that Pirates terminated the contract. It was a mutual agreement, so that’s the case,” Mthethwa concluded.
Orlando Pirates also confirmed that both parties agreed for the amicable separation to allow the defender to move to a club of his choice.
” At 27 years old Mthethwa is entering his prime and whilst the technical team wanted him to stay – the guarantee of regular football was not possible,” the club said in a statement.
“He will be remembered for his professionalism and discipline at all times. We wish him well as he enters a new chapter in his career,” Orlando Pirates concluded.
