How full are the Western Cape dams?

The latest official dam level stats in the Western Cape show that cumulatively the six major dams in the province are just shy of 100% of capacity.

The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – all saw significant increases during the winter months.

However, despite some unseasonal rain in recent days, the sun has made its appearance bringing some warmer weather as summer fast approaches.

Up on last year

The City of Cape Town uploaded its latest stats on Tuesday, 26 November.

The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 97.2% of total storage.

That’s marginally down from the 98.4% the previous week.

However, the current levels are up on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 96%.

Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the province’s total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 97% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 99.5%.

Western Cape residents need no reminding of life during the ‘Day Zero’ water crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2018.
