How CT City adjusted after Khanyisa Mayo's exit

Cape Town City FC are yet to fill the void left by Khanyisa Mayo and Fortune Makaringe has revealed how they adjusted after the striker’s exit.

Striker, Mayo joined CR Belouizdad of Algeria, leaving a huge gap at CT City, which they are yet to fill.

The 26-year-old decided to go to North Africa, although there was massive interest from SA football giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. As such CT City have kept their search for a prolific striker to lead their attack this season.

Following Mayo’s departure, CT City signed Amadou Soukouna from Bangkok United. He has played in all the three league matches played so far. Soukouna also featured in the MTN8 Cup tie however he is yet to register a goal.

CT City have only scored twice in the three league games they played so far, with Prins Tjiueza scoring both goals.

The 22-year-old Namibian scored when they drew 1-1 with Royal AM and their 1-0 win over SuperSport United in the Betway Premiership. They lost the other match 3-0 at the hands of Stellenbosch.

However, former Orlando Pirates midfielder Makaringe, who surfaced at CT City this season, says they have a formula to get goals even without Mayo’s direct replacement.

First, Makaringe was disappointed after missing the chance to play side-by-side with Mayo after his exit.

“I was a bit disappointed because I was looking forward to playing with him. He is a top player and the club allowed him to grow,” Makaringe told FARPost.

“I have to be honest that it’s not easy replacing a player of his calibre. He is special, and his qualities are hard to find.

“But at the club, the message from the coach [Eric Tinkler] has been to put a combined effort to get goals. Everyone has to score when they get a chance.

“When Mayo was scoring, other players were supplying; hence, the coach has told us all to shoulder the responsibility. That’s the plan. To be unpredictable as much as we can.

“It’s not about getting a replacement but about having that winning mentality and that ambition. This is something that I carried over from Pirates.

“Believing in ourselves and that the quality we have is good enough to get us winning and achieving the set goals, is the first step,” added Makaringe.
