Here’s why Percy Tau is likely to join Kaizer Chiefs or Sundowns

Unsettled Al Ahly forward Percy Tau has been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in the past 12 months.

The 30-year-old has not enjoyed life in Egypt under Marcel Koller since the Swiss took over in 2022. The Lion of Judah’s contract with the Red Devils expires next year but Koller might be willing to sell the star before June.

Percy Tau still wants to play at the highest level but joining Chiefs or Sundowns can be considered a downgrade. Three seasons ago, he played for Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League before joining Al Ahly. His move to Egypt was not well received by many and despite winning multiple titles, the Bafana Bafana star never clicked fully.

Percy Tau to Chiefs or Sundowns in January?

It is no secret that Tau wants to rub his shoulders with the best. He played in the Champions League against Real Madrid in his prime during his time at Club Brugge.

With the Club World Cup starting in mid-June next year, the 30-year-old may not participate in the tournament if Al Ahly decides not to renew his contract.

If Percy Tau’s situation does not improve in the coming weeks, he might return to Mamelodi Sundowns. Masandawana are one of the 32 teams which will play in the Club World Cup next year. Tau might look at that prospect and decide to leave Egypt before his contract expires.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has not selected him since June due to a lack of game time.

“You know Percy Tau doesn’t play anymore, he’s always on the bench,” Broos said on the ex-Sundowns star as per GOAL.

“I said two months ago the environment at Al Ahly is not positive. They wanted to sell him. Then you have the critics on social media who were not happy with his performances at Bafana. “

“I don’t think it’s the right moment for Percy to be with Bafana but it doesn’t mean he will never come back again,” Broos added.

“I hope he can change clubs. I hope he can be in a more positive environment and produce the performances we expect from him.”

Kaizer Chiefs might want to sign Percy Tau but given their position, Sundowns might be more attractive for the former Brighton attacker. Saudi Arabian teams are also reportedly interested in the striker.
