The eThekwini Municipality has provided an update on the Durban beaches that are open and safe for swimming these holidays.

Durban, known for its warm weather and beaches, used to be the favorite tourist destination around the holiday season, but over the years, tourists have shifted to other parts of the country, especially Cape Town. This was mainly due to crime, deteriorating infrastructure, and poor water quality.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika on 5 December, eThekwini Municipality’s Nkosenhle Madlala said Durban has 23 beaches, and only two were closed entirely due to high levels of E. Coli, which are Reunion and Anstey’s beaches. However, by the following week , they will be operating.

“We can assure our visitors that those two will be open again by the coming weekend. We will have our fully fledged 23 beaches that will be opened,” he said at the time.

Madlala said they were giving daily updates about the two beaches that were closed. Workers were on the ground fixing burst pipes, which affected the quality of the water.
