‘He was ready to walk off the field’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Tsepo Masilela has spoken out against Amakhosi fans abusing Kingston Nkhatha.

Nkhatha spent three years at Naturena but failed to win over Khosi fans. Despite winning three trophies with Stuart Baxter, he was often jeered by angry fans due to his lack of scoring goals.

Masilela, who played with the former striker for three years, said Baxter knew how to utilise Kingston. Speaking to Michael Morton on Soccerbeat, the former Kaizer Chiefs star touched on Nkhatha’s experience with the ‘boo boys’.

“it’s not a nice feeling,” Masilela said.

“I remember there was a game that you could feel and see in him that he was ready to walk off the field but the nice thing is that he knew the coach had his back.

“Kingston was the type of striker that fitted the system, you don’t have to score 20 goals. He fitted well into Baxter’s system, and even without the ball, he would press, and keep defenders on their toes. He understood Parker, they developed a good understanding,” he said.

Masilela said Baxter was the coach who got the best out of players.

“With coach Stuart Baxter, it was crystal clear. The way we train and the way we plan is how we are going to play. That’s why his game model or philosophy was easy for you. As defenders, we knew how to defend when we were caught in transition, as attackers, we knew how to get goals,” he said.

Despite Kaizer Chiefs fans booing Nkhatha, Baxter still played him in most matches. Masilela said the English tactician had a plan and always wanted to play the same team.

“He is not the coach that likes to chop and change you know. If he has a back four or back five, he sticks with it,” said the ex-Chiefs left-back.
