Residents across Gauteng woke up to a frosty morning on Friday. Freezing conditions gripped Johannesburg, and below-average temperatures were recorded throughout the province.
The central parts of the country experienced chilly weather, particularly around Johannesburg, where temperatures dipped below freezing. Pretoria also started the day with a minimum just above zero, while Vereeniging faced similarly cold conditions.
Temperatures remain low across province
Despite clear skies, Friday’s temperatures remained in the upper teens and lower 20s. Areas in the west, including Krugersdorp and Carletonville, stayed particularly cool, with maximums peaking at just 19°C.
Joel Guy, a SABC meteorologist, said, “It’s pretty chilly this morning for the central parts of the country, including around Gauteng. Johannesburg started freezing, with Pretoria only slightly warmer.”
He added that temperatures would increase slightly heading towards the Limpopo border, reaching mid to upper 20s in some areas.
Even with sunshine dominating the Gauteng skies, there was little relief from the cold. Guy confirmed that the cold front affecting the western parts of South Africa would not reach Gauteng directly but would keep temperatures subdued across the interior.
As the weekend approaches, weather models show no warming trend for the province. Saturday is expected to start cold again, with only a marginal daytime warming forecast.
