Marumo Gallants booked a spot in the Carling Knockout Cup, semi-finals on Sunday afternoon after defeating Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
Stellenbosch were the Carling Knockout Cup reigning champions having won the trophy last season. They defeated TS Galaxy 5-4 on penalties, the match had ended 1-1 after extra-time.
It was a special day for coaches Steve Barker and Wesley Sergel as it was their 250th match in-charge of the Cape Town outfit. However, they didn’t get the desired result.
Siyabulela Shai scored the only goal of the match in the 17th minute. The two teams were meeting for the second time this season.
In the reverse fixture in the Betway Premiership, the Stellies defeated Marumo Gallants 1-0.
In the Last 16, Dan Malesela and Co. defeated Polokwane City FC in a five-goal thriller, winning 3-2. As for the Stellies, they eliminated KZN side AmaZulu FC after winning 2-1.
MAGESI FC ELIMINATE TS GALAXY FROM THE CARLING KNOCKOUT CUP
In another encounter played on Sunday at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, newly promoted side Magesi FC eliminated TS Galaxy out of the competition. The Polokwane-based side defeated the Rockets 1-0.
Lehlogonolo Mokone found the back of the net just before the break, scoring in the 44th minute. The defeat left Galaxy without a victory in their last three matches. In those encounters, they registered one draw and suffered defeats.
As for Magesi, the team is enjoying a good run in their first season in the SA top-flight. Magesi are unbeaten in the last five matches in all competitions. Larsen’s troops have registered three wins and two draws.
Other teams that are in the semi-finals include Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay FC.
