Four armed robbery suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout and high-speed chase with the police at R59 in Alberton, Johannesburg South on Saturday morning.

Gauteng police said officers intercepted the suspects on the R59 after receiving intelligence that the group had intended to hit local stores. The attempted robbery escalated into a car chase, ultimately resulting in the death of all four suspects after a shootout.

Lieutenant General Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said the suspects fired at the police first during a high-speed chase.

“The suspects were about to rob businesses here in the surroundings. The police followed and attempted to stop them. When they attempted to stop them, they started firing at the police. The police retaliated and during that process, four suspects died at the scene,” Mthombeni said.

He said a firearm was seized inside the suspects’ vehicle.

Last week, seven suspects were arrested following an armed robbery that took place at Clearwater Mall in the west of Johannesburg.

“Three suspects were shot and injured,” said national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

“A speedy recovery to two Saps [South African Police Service] officers who were wounded during the shootout. Four firearms were seized,” she said last week.
