The death of South African actor Don Mlangeni Nawa has sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes flooding social media.

The 65-year-old veteran actor’s family confirmed his passing in a statement on Wednesday morning.

“It is with deep heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved father, Don Mlangeni Nawa.

“He was the heart of our family – a loving father, brother and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced,” the statement read.

The cause of the actor’s death has not been revealed, and his family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

“Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” the family added.

Tributes pour in for Don Mlangeni Nawa

Fans and fellow celebrities have since taken to social media platforms to remember Nawa.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said Nawa’s work not only entertained but also reflected the people’s stories, struggles, and triumphs.

With a solid background in theatre, Nawa began his television acting career in the 1980s, with his first major role in the Zulu drama Hlala Kwabafileyo in 1993.

He then went on to star in many other television shows. In 1998, he landed another role in the popular soap Isidingo, portraying the character of Bra Zeb Matabane — a role he played successfully until 2014.

Nawa was also well known for playing Laqhasha in five seasons of ’Sgudi ’Snaysi.

His most recent roles include King Langa in the first season of Shaka iLembe, Thato Mokoena in The River, and a SWAT Commander in Losing Lerato, just to mention a few
