Former ‘Ga Re Dumele’ actress Meme Ditshego has died

Legendary TV star Meme Ditshego, known for her comedy and acting brilliance, has passed away. Actor Spaces shared the news of her passing on Instagram through an official statement.

MEME DITSHEGO HAS PASSED AWAY

Meme Ditshego starred in hit shows like Ga Re Dumele and My Perfect Family, making her a household name in the country. The actress passed away on the evening of 25 June 2025.

According to reports, she was 60 years old and had been hospitalised following a short illness. Her exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

In an official statement shared by Actor Spaces on behalf of her management, Eye Media Artists, they noted:

“It is with deep sorrow and reverence that we announce the passing of Meme Ditshego — a beloved South African actress, legendary comedic talent, and a true veteran of our screen and stage.

“Meme passed away on the evening of 25 June 2025, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades and generations. She was a pioneer of performance — a woman whose vibrant spirit, sharp wit, and undeniable presence brought life to every role she played,” read the statement.

A STAGE AND SCREEN LEGEND

The actress began her acting career in a township theatre. Ditshego also dazzled stages with Sobonile Players, Performing Arts Council tours, and children’s theatre successes.

She transitioned to television in 1997, racking up standout roles from Sterk Skemer to Muvhango and the acclaimed The Coconuts. Her six-year Ga Re Dumele run won SAFTA gold, cementing her status as a cherished South African icon.

“Her unforgettable work has headlined major productions across SABC, eTV, Netflix, and MultiChoice, touching the hearts of South Africans and global audiences alike. Whether through laughter or heartfelt storytelling, Meme had a rare gift: she made us feel.

“We kindly ask that the public give them the space, love, and time they need to grieve and process this unimaginable loss,” said her management.
