Fond farewells across the country for the class of 2024

Thousands of matrics across the country celebrated the end of their school careers as they wrote their last 2024 matric examination this week. Schools bid farewell their class of 2024 in various ways – from traditional ceremonies to modern celebrations. Here is a look at some of the unique ways schools have honoured their matrics.

Goosebumps at AHMP

At the Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria, parents and guardians of the matric girls showed up at the examination hall after the matrics finished writing the Afrikaans literature paper – the last paper that the entire matric group wrote together. More than 200 parents showed up, stood beside their daughters, and sang for them as a farewell to the class of 2024.

The song they sang was a song by Joshua na die Reën. To make it even more special, the musician also showed up for the event to sing along with the parents.

Two Cape Town schools’ charitable matric tradition

Two schools in Cape Town – Paarl Girls’ High and Fish Hoek High School – have a special tradition. The matrics at these schools donate their school shoes to help less fortunate learners after writing their final exam. The donated shoes go to local schools and organisations to benefit learners in need. By taking part in this tradition, learners make a difference in the community.

The matric girls from Paarl Girls’ High also included a handwritten letter with their shoes addressing the learner who will walk in their shoes next.

Many other schools across the country also follow this tradition, e.g. Clarendon High School for Girls in East London and St Stithians College in Sandton.

Matrics ring the bell at Durban college

At Durban Girls’ College, the matric class of 2024 celebrated their final formal school day before writing exams. The day was filled with various traditions, starting with the final assembly. This was followed by the Bell Ringing where each matriculant gets the chance to ring the school bell symbolising the end of their school days. Lastly, the matric girls went for a dip, wearing their school uniforms, in the Durban ocean.
