- Maimane warns the metro could lose R89 million if the bridge isn’t fixed soon.

Build One SA leader Mmusi Maimane has demanded action from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality over delays in rebuilding the Matanzima Bridge in KwaNobuhle, which collapsed during floods.
Speaking at the site on Thursday, Maimane said he would write to the metro in his role as chair of Parliament’s appropriations committee, demanding a proper action plan.
“If this province and municipality can’t rebuild a bridge that supports the local economy, then it must be placed under administration,” he said.
The metro has until March 2026 to complete the bridge or risk losing R89 million from the Municipal Disaster Response Grant. The project also includes upgrading access roads and fixing 2.5km of the Cat Canal.
For now, residents are forced to cross dangerous debris to reach the Laetitia Bam Health Centre and schools. Motorists rely on poor gravel roads like Nomakhwezana Road, which has caused traffic chaos and damaged nearby streets.

Maimane gave the municipality 14 days to appoint a contractor.
“If no contractor is appointed urgently, the municipality is telling the people of KwaNobuhle they don’t belong here,” he said.
He also accused the city of failing to spend R53 million in disaster relief funds. “Three months later and not a single contractor has been hired. This is wasteful spending,” he said.
Maimane also took a swipe at President Cyril Ramaphosa, saying his visit to the area led to no progress.
“Without infrastructure, there is no working economy. But this municipality is failing dismally,” said Maimane, vowing to push the issue in Parliament.
But Mayor Babalwa Lobishe hit back, calling Maimane’s remarks opportunistic.
“He is misinformed. We haven’t received the R89 million yet,” said Lobishe.
She said the metro had already committed R44 million from its budget before getting the R53 million from the national government.
“We’re finalising the appointment of contractors this Friday. Work should begin within 21 days. But that money is not for the bridge — we’re still waiting for those funds,” she said.
