For the eighth year in a row, Mamelodi Sundowns have clinched the Premier Soccer League (PSL) championship; however, with this being Betway’s first year sponsoring the league, fans have given the trophy a massive thumbs down.
The trophy, designed and created by artist Nelson Makamu, was unveiled for the first time on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium during the final match-up between Mamelodi Sundowns and Magesi United. Nelson describes the trophy as an ode to Mzansi’s rich history with the sport. In his own words, he calls it a “love letter to football”.
“It’s a tribute to where we come from, who we are, and where we are going,” he said.
Despite the touching story behind this newly unveiled trophy, it has received backlash and negative feedback from fans, as they express immense disappointment with the final product. These fans reveal that they had high expectations for what the league would reveal, and expressed that what they were shown is not up to standard with other domestic and international cups, and have compared it to a shisha or hookah pipe.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative responses, the players and Mamelodi Sundowns, who are the recipients of the trophy, appear to be more than happy with the trophy. Veterans Themba Zwane and Dennis Onyango were among the players who sang the praises,
“Well, every trophy comes with its own shape, but it’s heavy, hey. I think it’s heavy like the cheque they gave us,” Dennis told the media after the game. “But for me, what’s important is for the team to have that medal. The medals are very nice, the trophy is also nice, don’t take me out of line. The trophy is nice, the money is also nice, and the season has been good,” Dennis Onyango says.
