Syros Cats will open applications again in January 2025 for volunteers to help care for cats on the island of Syros in Greece. Following are the details of what this opportunity is all about.

What are the requirements for suitable volunteers?

Syros Cats is looking for fit, mature, healthy, and independent volunteers – whether single or couples – who can commit to a minimum of one month’s work on the island.

Volunteers will be involved in all aspects of cat care, working approximately five hours a day, five days a week.

Those with veterinary experience or experience working with feral cats are at an advantage. However, Syros Cats encourage any cat lover prepared to do the required work to apply.

About the island and its cats

Syros is a small Aegean island and the capital of the Cyclades. The latest census figures show a population of around 25 000 people. Residents estimate there are around 3 000 stray cats living around dumpsters, in spare pieces of land, in abandoned houses, and anywhere there might be a chance of food. Many are in poor condition, infested with parasites. and hungry.

There is no safety net for animals on the Greek islands. The only help they get is from concerned animal lovers who can afford to pay for veterinary care, food, and medication.

What will a volunteer’s day look like?

Volunteers are required to start at 8:00 in the mornings. Morning duties include feeding special needs and outside cats, administering treatments, cleaning and replenishing food and water bowls, and maintaining litter trays and bedding.

After breakfast, volunteers spend time with sick cats, play and socialise with others, and help with trips to the vet. There is always additional work including gardening, sewing, and making products for sale.

In the evenings, responsibilities include feeding, administering medications, cleaning, and preparing for the night.

In addition to looking after feral cats on the island, volunteers help socialise kittens for adoption and ensure that the Syros Cats facilities remain clean and comfortable for all the cats.

Where do volunteers stay?

Volunteers will have basic accommodation either on the campus or in the main house. The campus accommodation has en-suite facilities and simple cooking arrangements, while those staying in the main house share a kitchen and bathroom.

There are typically around four volunteers at any given time, hailing from diverse backgrounds and different parts of the world. Volunteers are responsible for their travel expenses and food during their stay and will not be allowed to bring along children or pets.

It is important to note that volunteers will have to ensure that they comply with any visa and passport requirements.
