Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe has shared his honest take on newly signed Amakhosi keeper Fiacre Ntwari.
Ntwari linked with the Soweto giants ahead of the current 2024/25 season after parting ways with another Betway Premiership side TS Galaxy.
Upon his arrival at Chiefs, the Rwandan international has been the preferred choice in-between the sticks. He’s working closely with goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi.
Other goalkeepers in the Chiefs squad that are competing with Ntwari for the number one spot include Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Bontle Molefe.
The 25-year-old has started seven matches in all competitions, only keeping one cleansheet and conceding 11 goals.
WHAT IS WILLIAM SHONGWE’S HONEST TAKE ON FIACRE NTWARI
The former goalkeeper has come to the defence of Ntwari citing that all goalkeepers concede goals.
“All goalkeepers concede goals, take into account six of the goals came from two games [in defeats against Mamelodi Sundowns, 2-1 in the league and 4-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter, finals]. Take out those two games, it changes the picture completely,” Shongwe told FARPost.
“I know the goalkeeper is under pressure and the whole goalkeeping department. Even the previous goalkeepers went through it, that’s why they were changed.
“The goalkeeper doesn’t operate in isolation, when the whole team is not performing well, goalkeepers find themselves in those situations. There are certain days when they [goalkeepers] can do well.
“The players are making mistakes, and that exposes the goalkeepers. He cannot save all the balls that he’s facing.”
