- The party says Dr Alulutho Mazwi was made to work despite being visibly unwell, leading to his untimely death.
- The Health Department has promised a fair investigation and brought in the Health Ombudsman to look into the case.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have called for a full investigation into the death of a doctor at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal.
Dr Alulutho Mazwi died after allegedly being forced to work while he was sick.
In a statement, the EFF asked the KwaZulu-Natal Member of the Executive Council for Health, Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, to act quickly.
The party said: “Dr Mazwi was forced to work while his health was deteriorating. He had to perform his duties while it was clear that he was not well at all. We call on transparent and investigation so that those who were involved in such situation should be held accountable. This is a reflection of the exploitation of black professionals in the health sector that need to stop.”
EFF members picketed outside the hospital on Tuesday while a memorial service for the doctor was taking place inside.
The Department of Health also released a statement. It said it was continuing its own investigation into the matter and promised fairness.
“The Department reaffirms its commitment to a transparent, fair, and thorough internal investigation,” the statement said.
It also confirmed that Dr Mazwi’s death is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.
The issue has now reached national level. Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has stepped in and announced that the Health Ombudsman will also investigate the case.
