Durban City’s Sinamandla dies after collapsing during warm up

Durban City midfielder Sinamandla Zondi, 22, tragically died on Tuesday after collapsing during warm-up ahead of a Motsepe Foundation Championship match against Milford FC at Chatsworth Stadium. 

Despite receiving emergency treatment and being rushed to the hospital, Sinamandla passed away, prompting officials to suspend the match, which Milford was leading 1-0 at halftime, EWN reported. 

Durban FC released a statement on social media expressing their condolences. 

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Sinamandla Zondi aka Sgora, a loved member of the Durban City family. 

“Sinamandla was more than a talented footballer, he was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son and an inspiration to all who knew him. 

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone affected by his tragic loss. We will continue to support those close to him during this difficult time.” 

Durban FC, formerly known as Maritzburg United, currently sit at the top of the First Division table, five points clear of second-placed Kruger United with a game in hand. The club is aiming for promotion to the ABSA Premiership, having been relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2022/23 season. 

Users on X also expressed their sadness and appreciation for the player. 

“Condolences to his family, Durban City family and football community. May his soul rest in peace,” wrote one user.
