Cape Town residents are up in arms over rowdy parties being thrown at Camps Bay at Clifton beaches. But their complaints have irked South Africans, who claim that the picturesque venues are public and not private beaches.
DOES SA HAVE ANY PRIVATE BEACHES?
Unlike other countries around the world, South Africa does not have any privately owned beaches.
According to the Sea-Shore Act, it vests “ownership” of the sea and the sea-shore in the President for the benefit and use of the public.
However, many secluded beaches are around the SA coastlines, and they can be found via a simple Google search.
According to a City of Cape Town document, beach-goers must refrain from the following…
- Being in possession of or consuming any alcohol except on licensed premises or where a temporary liquor licence has been granted;
- Being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other dependence-producing substance;
- Holding, convening, or organising any entertainment, display, performance, procession, public meeting, recreation, or event without the permission of the City or doing so in contravention of any condition attached to any such authorisation
- Acting in a manner that poses a risk to life, human well-being or property;
- Behaving in an improper, indecent, unruly, violent, or anti-social manner or causing a
- disturbance;
- Performing an indecent act.
