The 49-year-old celebrated DJ was born on 11 March 1976 in eThekwini. The DJ later moved to Umtata, 29 km from the home of late South African President Nelson Mandela in Qunu Village.

However, while celebrating Nelson Mandela’s release from prison on 11 February 1990, DJ Black Coffee was involved in an accident that left him with a brachial plexus injury on his left arm.

CAREER

While growing up, he had a soft spot for music, and after matric, DJ Black Coffee majored in Jazz Studies at Durban University of Technology.

He went on to work with Madala Kunene as a backup singer, and this exposure saw him compete in Red Bull Music in 2003.

DJ Black Coffee had his shot at fame when he released ’ Happiness.’ Two years later, he made his presence known in the industry when he remixed Hugh Masekela’s 1972 hit ‘Stimela.’

Since then, DJ Black Coffee has won big and made Europe his playground. Undoubtedly, one of his biggest career highlights is his seventh studio albumSubconsciously, released in 2021.

The album went on to win the Best Dance/Electonic Album award at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
