Mama Joy – real name Joy Chauke – has seemingly thrown shade at Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture Gayton McKenzie, who is accused of blowing public funds on his short trip to the Olympics in France.
The outspoken political leader has confessed to spending over R800 000 on travel, accommodation, and other expenses.
Gayton – who has defended his trip and the costs – shut down the department’s “superfan budget” since coming into office – something Chauke has previously benefitted from.
GAYTON MCKENZIE: ‘I’M NOT A SUPERFAN’
Speaking in a press conference at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg on Thursday, 17 October, Gayton McKenzie sought to clear up any confusion about his travel expenses.
Earlier this week, Gayton tweeted that his trip to the Paris Olympics was for dual purposes. This was to watch the Opening Ceremony and to attend several government meetings.
Addressing the media, Gayton said: “I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. I am as transparent as possible.”
The minister went on to explain that he chose a “cheaper” four-star accommodation instead of a five-star one.
He also explained that prices were abnormally high because of the Olympics. “You can’t compare Euros with Rands. Our currency is not that strong,” he said.
Gayton shadily added: “Don’t say I went for a joyride, and don’t compare me to Mama Joy. I’m not a super fan; I am the Minister of Sports, Art and Culture”.
DID MAMA JOY THROW SHADE AT MINISTER
On her X account, Mama Joy also appeared to throw shade at Gayton McKenzie, who was being questioned over his travel expenses.
The 50-year-old sports fan posted a screenshot of a journalist who wanted to know if she believed the minister was “two-faced” over allegations he misused public funds.
It’s unclear if she has responded.
Chauke also reposted a tweet by EFF member Sinawo Thambo who had filed a complaint about Gayton with the Public Prosecutor.
Thambo’s tweet referencing the minister read: “Having Gayton Mckenzie as a Minister feels like being robbed at knifepoint every day. When you try to heal, the criminal comes and promises to donate his salary.
“When you turn the other side, the criminal promises to reimburse athletes who paid their own way to the Olympics. When you think you are recovering, the criminal spends R400k on ground transport and R215k on flights.”

Mama Joy also retweeted another shady tweet about Gayton that read: “@joychauke5 was sidelined by the minister for him to enjoy those benefits alone. Our proper and magical fan denied an opportunity just for this.
“So the minister think we were just stupid like goats when he told us that he was not going to use any public funds for such events”.
