Award-winning fashion designer Lukhanyo Mdingi collaborates with Mexican tequila brand, Don Julio for their Artist Residency Program.
According to the LVMH Prize, the Cape Town-based founder works with artisans to create timeless, luxury products, he also received become of the talented designers to receive the LVMH Prize in 2021 for his true design approach. The idea is to create a bridge that connects their past to timeless quality pieces.
News publication, IOL, states that Lukhanyo joins other South African artists such as fashion designer Crystal Birch, music producer Kelvin Momo and visual artist Imraan Christain.
The above-mentioned source also mentions that this residency program is set to honour and showcase the collaboration between South African and Mexican creativity, craftsmanship, and rich cultural traditions. As a way to highlight the unique artistic expressions and techniques from both countries, we aim to create a platform where diverse cultures can come together, fostering collaboration and mutual appreciation.
Speaking on this collaboration, Lukhanyo added, “Craftsmanship is at the heart of what I do — whether it’s fashion or textiles. Together with Don Julio, we celebrate authentic storytelling.”
Lukhanyo also got to showcase his designs at the high fashion event, Confections x Collections 2024 held at the Mount Nelson, Belmond Hotel.
According to TWYG, the young designer rarely participates in traditional fashion shows, adding that, his being at this event was amazing.
Speaking on his design debut on the day, Lukhanyo told the fashion hub, “I wanted to create a whole universe around the collection. The grounds here are extraordinary and we wanted to see how we can utilise the hotel to its fullest.”
