According to recent reports there has been a surge in cases of COVID-19 in Chatsworth. Residents have been urged to take precautions especially during this busy period, reported the SABC News Podcast.

Initial reports on the upsurge were on 23 December 2024 on Lotus FM‘s current affairs programme, Newsbreak. A volunteer from one of the organisations in the province revealed that numerous patients who showed flu-like symptoms reportedly tested positive for the virus.

COVID-19 CASES IN CHATSWORTH

Speaking to Anesh Ramklass, a volunteer at the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre’s Coronavirus Action Committee (COVAC), Lotus FM revealed the number of those who allegedly tested positive. Ramklaas said:

“The information we’ve obtained is from a local doctor, Dr John Sebastian, who a week or two ago had done checks on 25 patients who had come to him with flu-like symptoms. When he did the test on them they all tested positive for COVID.”

‘PEOPLE ARE PICKING UP THE VIRUS IN CROWDED AREAS’

Ramklass also explained that the source of the COVID-19 is yet unknown. However, they have noticed where people usually contract it. He stated:

“We couldn’t identify any particular source, but our concern is it appears to be that people are picking up the virus in crowded areas. Our big concern for people’s health is we’re saying when you go into crowded areas specifically, we suggest you use a mask to reduce the infection.”

‘EXERCISE DUE CARE’ DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

According to Ramklass, they still want people to enjoy the festive. However, they need to exercise caution. “We want you to enjoy the festive season, but we need you to exercise due care.”

He also spoke about how severe the symptoms of COVID-19 cases recorded in Chatsworth are. Ramklass said: “The interesting point on the 25 cases we spoke about earlier, every one of them had been vaccinated. So which probably would have been a very high likelihood that the cases were mild.”

Ramklass said only one patient’s symptoms got so severe that he ended up in a coma. However, he was in the ICU only for about two days.
