Fybos Dam upgrades to be completed soon
The City of Cape Town has said that upgrades at Fynbos Dam in Majik Forest, Bellvilleis expected to be completed by June this year.
According to the City, the Water and Sanitation Directorate is busy appointing a new contractor to complete the upgrade, which stalled in November 2024 due to contractual disputes.
The upgrade project will ultimately cost the City around R5,5 million, all directed towards assisting water flow from the dam through the spillway.
Located in Bellville’s Majik Forest Conservation Area, Fynbos Dam forms part of Cape Town’s stormwater infrastructure assets maintained by the Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) Branch.
The dam is routinely inspected for safety, which identified the need for upgrades to its severely eroded spillway structure.
“Residents have been supportive by being patient while the appointment of the new contractor is being finalised, and we want to thank them for that. Going forward if all goes according to plan, it is anticipated that work on site will soon resume to restore the safety and integrity of this valued infrastructure,” the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien said.
Zeekoevlei to be dredged
In other news, the City of Cape Town recently announced that plans to dredge the Zeekoevlei waterbody will soon also be under way.
As per the City, over the past decades, there has been a large build-up of sediment and nutrient rich organics in Cape Town’s Zeekoevlei lakebed that has resulted in algal blooms, which has negatively impacted the overall health of the vlei and its water quality for recreational users.
The City said that two sections of Zeekoevlei will be dredged over a period of 26 months, namely Home Bay and Storm Bay, and that it was an extremely complicated process that requires a lot of prep work.
Residents and visitors should expect a lot of activity in these areas where the contractor will be busy.
