Chiefs season ‘a flop’ if they win Nedbank Cup, miss MTN8 places

Kaizer Chiefs are one match away from ending their trophy drought. However, winning the Nedbank Cup doesn’t mean they’re out of the woods.

Kaizer Chiefs fans are excited at the prospect of Nedbank Cup success

Fans of all clubs around the world love winning cups. That’s obvious. However, another season outside of the MTN8 places will be a sign that Chiefs aren’t getting any closer to winning the league crown. Erik Ten Hag got sacked by Man United despite winning the EFL and FA Cups. The board decided that their dwindling league position, despite massive expenditure on players, was unacceptable. Are there parallels between United and Chiefs?

Do Kaizer Chiefs fans need to chill?

Phakaaathi writer Khaya Ndubane thinks that Chiefs fans ‘need to chill’ amid excitement over their 2-1 Nedbank Cup win over Sundowns. Honestly, we can’t say we disagree with that stance, and he might be onto something. There’s still a massive hurdle in the way of Chiefs finally ending their long trophy drought. That barrier happens to be Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

As fate would have it, Pirates and Chiefs meet twice in quick succession at the sharp end of the 2024-2025 campaign. First, they do battle in the Betway Premiership on Saturday, 03 May at 15:00. Then, they meet in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, 10 May. Mfundo Vilakazi will not be available for the Glamour Boys as he’ll be on Afcon U20 duty. Outstanding Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokzi misses out for Pirates for the same reason.

Does a Nedbank Cup win and a place OUTSIDE the top eight constitute a successful season?
