‘It is not exceptional to win a cup,’ said the Chiefs head coach.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has warned his players to keep their feet on the ground as they prepare for the last few games of the Betway Premiership season.

Amakhosi ended a ten year wait for a trophy on Saturday when they beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban to lift the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs to axe Nabi?

It is a reflection of Chiefs’ first season under Nabi, however, that a report from the Sunday Times the very next day said the Tunisian was set to be fired at the end of the campaign.

Chiefs have had another inconsistent campaign in the league, and are in danger of failing to qualify for the MTN8 for the second year in a row. Amakhosi are currently ninth in the table, with four games left to play.

On Saturday they visit Sekhukhune United, who are 15 points clear of Chiefs in third.

“We need to remain humble,” Nabi told reporters after Saturday’s win.

“It is true that today and maybe tomorrow there will be a lot of joy and celebration. But at some point the celebrations need to end, and we need to concentrate on the task ahead.

“It will be a very tough game next Saturday. We won the (Nedbank Cup) semifinal against Sundowns and maybe we were too festive and we lost the next league game.”

Chiefs actually drew 0-0 at Chippa United immediately after the Masandawana clash, but they did then lose two Premiership games in a row, to Marumo Gallants and Pirates.

Amakhosi, indeed, have not won in seven league matches, their last Premiership win coming over two months ago at home to Magesi FC.

‘You need to look at the task ahead’

“We need to understand that Chiefs are a big club,” added Nabi.

“It is not exceptional to win a cup, it needs to be a habit. You win the cup, you give it value, and after that you need to look at the next task ahead, to prepare for it and win the next one.”
