A Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate looks set to reunite with his former mentor, Ernst Middendorp, at Cape Town Spurs.

The talented defender, Lungelo Bhengu, was spotted training with the club on Thursday, signalling a potential move to the second-tier side.

Bhengu, who rose through the ranks at Chiefs alongside the likes of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, parted ways with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars last season. Prior to that, he had a stint at Maritzburg United, where he played a pivotal role under Middendorp’s guidance.

The German tactician has been known to admire Bhengu’s versatility, having deployed him as a right-back, central defender, and even in midfield during his time at Maritzburg. The 23-year-old defender made 30 appearances for the Team of Choice, showcasing his potential and adaptability.

Bhengu’s journey began at the Chiefs academy between 2015 and 2018, where he honed his skills and gained valuable experience. He then moved to Highlands Park, where he represented the reserve team.

ERNST MIDDENDORP COULD HAND BHENGU SHORT-TERM CONTRACT AT SPURS

With his impressive performances in the DStv Diski Challenge, Bhengu earned a promotion to Maritzburg United‘s senior team in the 2019/20 season. He made his debut against Golden Arrows, marking a significant milestone in his career.

As a free agent, Bhengu is eager to revive his career under the tutelage of Middendorp, who has a proven track record of developing young talent.

A move to Cape Town Spurs could provide him with the perfect platform to showcase his abilities and contribute to the club’s success. It is likely they will hand Bhengu a short-term contract to prove himself this season.

CT Spurs have not had the best start to the season and are currently 10th on the Motsepe Foundation table. They were relegated last season, failing to retain their place in the elite league.

Their attempts to quickly return to the top-flight have not started too well. They have won two of their fixtures, drew three and lost three.
