Capetonians, don’t dare miss out on the fabulous free family fun at this weekend’s Cape Town Carnival. It promises to be a festive celebration of some of the Mother City’s top stars, as well as the unique talents of communities from across the city.
Besides all the incredible performers and jaw-dropping floats that will make their way down Greenpoint’s Fan Walk on Saturday, 15 March, this year’s “WowZA!” event has several exciting additions in store.
These include the familiar faces from Cape Town’s favourite rugby team, the DHL Stormers, who will interact with fans as they accompany their custom “Taking the Cape by Storm” float down Somerset Street.
Another unmissable act at this year’s event is the stunning Erika Januza, Rio’s Carnival Queen, who has held the official title ‘Queen of the Drums’ for three years. Hot on the heels of her performance at the iconic Rio Carnival recently, Erika is a special guest of the Cape Town Carnival and will be showing Capetonians how it’s done in Brazil as she performs in this year’s event.
She will be joined by some of Cape Town’s hottest queens from The Drag Cartel: Maxine Wild, Dee Blogging, Diamante Eclipse, Valentina Petronella (LeCap), Le Baby, and Emogen Moore.
And that’s not all: Hip hop sensation Bravo Le Roux will perform in the parade, as well as YoungstaCPT, who will once again bring his uplifting energy to the Fanwalk.
Paxton Fielies, one of Cape Town’s brightest stars, also stars in the line-up of unmissable Cape Town Carnival musical acts.
As always, crowd favourites such as the Cape Town firefighters, the Chinese community, the marching band, and traditional dancers will light up the fanwalk with their energy and passion.
The Cape Town Carnival is celebrating 15 years of providing a platform to entertain and delight the crowds, but as Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes notes, it also represents an opportunity to connect people from diverse communities across the city.
“This year, we mark 15 incredible years celebrating community-based creativity and culture – if you haven’t been to Greenpoint in March, you haven’t experienced the most life-affirming event of the year,” she says.
