The City of Cape Town has announced planned water and electricity shutdowns for certain hours across multiple areas on Tuesday, 26 November, to allow critical maintenance work. Residents and businesses are urged to prepare by storing water and planning for power outages, as the disruptions are set to last most of the day.
Water supply maintenance to impact these areas
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will conduct essential maintenance, disrupting temporary water supply. In the Cape Town CBD, areas along Roeland Street, including Brandweer and Waterloo Streets, will experience a water shutdown from 9:00 to 17:00. Teams will replace valves and conduct other infrastructure upgrades.
Similarly, the Wingerd Reservoir will halt supply to nearby areas from 9:00 to 17:00, allowing for the installation of a pressure-reducing valve. Additionally, in Paarden Eiland, Section Street and surrounding areas will undergo a test shut-off on 26 November to evaluate conditions for upcoming replacement work.
The disruption will extend to Strand on Wednesday, 27 November, from 08:00 to 17:00, where newly installed water mains in Herschell and Grey Streets will be connected to the existing infrastructure.
Electricity Supply Interruption Planned for Woodlands and Colorado Park
The city has also scheduled an electricity outage in parts of Woodlands and Colorado Parkon 26 November from 8:30 to 16:00, weather permitting. This interruption will allow teams to perform essential upgrades to the electrical infrastructure.
Residents are advised to switch off appliances and inverters before power restoration to minimise the risk of system overloads or tripping. The city warned that restoration could be delayed due to the complexity of the work, but teams will work diligently to meet the schedule.
“The electricity supply could be restored at any time, and customers must please treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the interruption,” the city stated.
“Residents are encouraged to switch off appliances as a precaution and to avoid damage caused by power surges when the power comes back on.”
