Cape Town to conduct 55-hour electricity upgrade affecting 6 areas

The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department has announced essential electricity overhead infrastructure upgrades for Area South, scheduled to take place this weekend. The work will begin at 22:00 on Friday, 25 October, and is expected to conclude by 5:00 on Monday, 28 October, depending on weather conditions.

These upgrades will affect six areas, including Grassy Park, Pelican Park, Muizenberg, Steenberg, Sun Valley, and Clovelly. However, residents are assured that their electricity supply will remain active throughout the process.

Potential supply interruptions

Despite the City’s assurance of continuous power, brief interruptions may occur during the maintenance period. The city has urged residents to remain vigilant in case of supply disruptions such as electrical tripping, which can happen occasionally during such upgrades.

“Residents are advised to check the City’s official communication channels, including the City’s social media channels, or contact the Call Centre for any updates on the upgrade work,” the city stated.

Regular updates will be provided through the City’s social media platforms and official outlets to keep residents informed of any changes or unforeseen disruptions.

Prepaid meter update concludes

In addition to the infrastructure upgrades, the city confirmed the successful completion of the National Prepaid Meter Software Update for its customers. This update, required for all prepaid meters in South Africa by the end of November 2024, has already been implemented in Cape Town. Approximately 570 000 prepaid meters in the city have been updated over the past three years.

“Due to some inaccurate reporting, there has been confusion regarding prepaid meter updates,” the city said.

“We want to assure our customers that they will continue to recharge their prepaid meters without any issues.”

Safety tips for residents

The City has also issued safety reminders for residents during this period of upgrades:

  • Verify the work order number and identification card when officials visit your home.
If in doubt, contact the City’s Call Centre at ‪0860 103 089‬ or report suspicious behaviour to law enforcement.
  • Ensure the City-issued ID card displays the city logo, name, surname, and an embedded photo of the staff member or contractor.
