Impeached former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been announced by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party as its new convenor for Mpumalanga.

Mkhwebane, who left the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) last week, was unveiled on Friday, 25 October in Johannesburg, along with former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, who ditched the ANC in early October.

Mchunu will serve as the convenor of KwaZulu-Natal.

Mkhwebane joins husband at MK Party

Mkhwebane’s defection to the Jacob Zuma-led MK Party is hardly a surprise. Besides being a long-time ally of former president Zuma, her husband – David Skosana – is currently a member of Parliament representing the MK Party.

Asked why she joined the party, Mkhwebane said with South Africa’s third-largest, she feels at home.

“I joined MK because it is the home that understands the persecution of black people,” she said.

Earlier in the week, Mkhwebane said part of the reason she ditched the EFF was that she was not a politician.

“I’m a technocrat, I’m not a politician. So, possibly that’s one thing which you are expected to perform political work, when I don’t have that. I only have my technocrat expertise, I mean being the former public protector for the past almost seven years, and there are other contributions which I would have made but unfortunately it’s operating in a political space. So, I don’t think it’s fair for people just to read a lot out of that,” she told Newzroom Afrika‘s Thabo Mdluli.
