Several teams qualified for AFCON 2025 last night, while others remain on the cusp of elimination.

Biggest winners

Former African champions Egypt and Senegal qualified alongside DR Congo, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Algeria and Angola.

During a stalemate game, the Senegalese fans had to wait until the 96th minute to see Sadio Mané ink his country’s name into AFCON 2025, while Egypt’s Ibrahim Adel scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute.

In the middle

It was a head-scratching night for Bafana Bafana fans who saw their team draw 1-1 against Congo-Brazzaville four days after Teboho Mokoena’s double led South Africa to a 5-0 victory.

Hugo Broos’ men are second in Group K, two points behind Uganda. They play each other on November 11.

Although second, the South Africans are still favourites to qualify with a four-point cushion over third-place Congo.

Biggest losers

Reigning champions Ivory Coast suffered a surprising 1-0 loss against Sierra Leone but remain top of Group G, and have already qualified for the competition.

Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Sudan was another shock result, conceding two goals in three minutes. They sit third on the table, four points off a qualification spot with two games remaining.

The Black Stars look likely to miss AFCON 2025.

Zwane update following AFCON 2025 qualifiers

Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder Themba Zwane was forced off after suffering a horrific injury that left him having to be stretched off in the 33rd minute.

The South African Football Association reported Broos’ update on the matter, who said,

“Themba Zwane is a very important player for us. It was not a good thing for us that Themba had to go out with an injury,

“It is a big injury, it is an Achilles tendon injury. I’m afraid he will be out for months. So, again, when you lose such an important player, it’s difficult, certainly in a game where you dominated. It’s always difficult to lose such a player because Themba is someone who can keep the ball, who can give the last pass. So, he was not there and maybe that was also a reason why we didn’t play so well.”
