A new global survey, the School Index by Carfax Education, has revealed the best African private secondary schools. The American School of Lagos in Nigeria has secured the top spot.

Areas assessed for schools

The School Index by Carfax Education stated that international education experts carefully assessed and selected the best African private secondary schools.

The American School of Lagos scored highly in academics, facilities, preparation for university entry, unique ethos, and more.

Fiona McKenzie, the head of education at Carfax Education, explained that the rankings are a helpful tool for parents and guardians who want to enrol their kids in top schools, highlighting the increasing need for quality education. She added that the Schools Index is in its fifth year this year and has become a valuable resource for parents.

Top five

The best private secondary schools for 2024 in Africa according to Carfax are as follows:

Rank School Country
1 American School of Lagos Nigeria
2 Bishops Diocesan College South Africa
3 Michaelhouse School South Africa
4 Pembroke House School Kenya
5 The British International School, Cairo Egypt

Markedly, these top five schools do not all follow the same curriculum.

The American School of Lagos follows the US curriculum as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Both Michaelhouse School and Bishops Diocesan College use the South African curriculum.

Pembroke House School and The British International School both use the UK curriculum. The British International School follows the UK curriculum up to year 11, after which it follows an internationally focused IB program. This method aligns with the school’s goal of nurturing confident and capable global citizens, ensuring that students are ready for prestigious universities worldwide.

Bishops Diocesan College’s recent scandal

Bishops Diocesan College has taken disciplinary action against seven learners who allegedly assaulted a fellow classmate at its boarding facility. They had beaten the victim so badly that someone had to rush him to a hospital. The school has confirmed that the learner has since been discharged.

The accused learners have been charged with breaching the school’s Code of Conduct and further breaching its anti-bullying policy.
