After a fruitful two-year spell as striker coach at giant football club Manchester United, mzansi soccer legend Benni McCarthy is back on local shores just in time to take on the role of a Carling Cup ambassador.

After playing an integral part in developing and mentoring the strikers at Manchester United, Benni McCarthy decided to not renew his contract with the prestigious club and looks on to the next step in his illustrious career. Since his return, the former star has had to clear a few rumours and misconceptions that the fans and media had.

One rumour that had seemed to be making rounds in the sporting world following the mzansi legend’s exit at Manchester was a possible move to the Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns. This was sparked by a chance encounter between him and the club’s sporting director Flemming Berg in Europe. Upon his return, Benni put these rumours to rest as he revealed that the meeting was merely casual and was not in connection to any job.

Rather, he applauded the admirable job the Mamelodi Sundowns coaching staff have done with their players, as it has been evident in the team’s performance and results.

“They decided with the coaches that they have, and they are doing well…I don’t see why they should interfere with that just because I’m no longer at a club. Being available doesn’t mean that I’m looking for any job or that they should make a change,” Benni says.

Although he is still a fan favourite and his legacy as a mzansi legend will never die, fans have expressed relief regarding Benni’s revelation as they believe that he would not been a good fit for Masandawana. However, others are not fully convinced and believe that Benni’s homecoming will land him on the Brazilian’s side.
