Basadien, Rhodes, Mbuthuma, Du Preez

Following successive dominant seasons from Mamelodi Sundowns, it’s refreshing to see Orlando Pirates still in contention for the PSL, albeit slim.

The previous two seasons have been yawn-evoking at this point of the campaign, with the Brazilians already engraved onto the trophy, and while they’re favourites to make it eight in a row, one can’t rule out a Buccaneers upset.

That is what’s keeping the league alive. Neither side can afford to lose.

Rumours around the division

  • Fawaaz Basadien remains ominous about his future at Stellenbosch amid Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates interest. Both sides tried to sign the 28-year-old in January and will undoubtedly try their luck again this offseason.
  • Another player Orlando Pirates tried to land in the summer is Cape Town youngster Jaedin Rhodes, and like Basadien, they’re expected to pursue him in the upcoming winter window.
  • Pirates and Chiefs are engaged in negotiations with Richards Bay striker Yanela Mbuthuma.
  • Ashley Du Preez may have scored Kaizer Chiefs’ most important goal of the season in the Nedbank Cup semi-final, but his lacklustre season puts him in a precarious position at the club. The Soweto giants are heavily linked with various top African strikers.

Du Preez wants more game time

The former Stellies striker isn’t used to life on the bench, but that’s what he’s had to become accustomed to under Nasreddine Nabi’s command, something he hopes will be short-lived.

“Yeah definitely that’s what every striker would like to do, coming on as a sub, I’ve been doing that in two games against Magesi, getting few minutes from the bench and scored a winning goal so for me it’s just to prove week in and week out that I want to be in the starting XI – every player wants to be in the starting XI,” said Du Preez.
