Media personality, Anele Mdoda recently shared a horrific altercation between her and an Uber driver who threatened to rape her, while she was travelling in Cape Town.
Anele shared clips of the altercation on her X (formerly Twitter) page, she said after the rape threat she pretended to be live on Instagram, while she was recording him to ensure her safety.
Sharing the clip, she explained that she did not converse with the driver during the trip, upset by this, he said: “In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson.”
She recounted that when she arrived at her hotel, the driver was upset when he realised that she was recording him, which led to him being aggressive and attempting to grab her phone. She also mentioned that a couple could see that she was under duress.
So after he threatened me with rape to keep in line I started recording so that if anything happens to me it’s on record. I faked being on instagram live.

This revelation had X users split in opinions, as some shared their stories and comforted Anele, while others found the incident hard to believe because it was not on the clips shared.

This is a serious allegation, but something isn’t adding up. If you genuinely felt in danger, why not call the police or security at your hotel instead of just faking an Instagram live? Also, was there any prior exchange that led to this reaction from the driver? We’ve seen cases…

Having grown up in Cape Town my sister, I can attest to the city’s high levels of violence in South Africa. It seems the media downplays this issue, likely to maintain tourism. The e-hailing industry is largely controlled by foreigners, who hate black South Africans.

Anele extended her gratitude for the support surrounding the Uber saga, and assured that she would open a case against the driver.
