  • Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe spent decades fighting for women’s rights and peace in her community.
  • She rose from grassroots activism to national leadership in the ANC Women’s League and Parliament.

Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, the Deputy President of the ANC Women’s League, has died at the age of 64.

The ANC confirmed her death on Saturday, 17 May 2025, describing her as a loyal servant of the people and a strong voice for peace, dignity and women’s rights.

Born in KwaMashu on 27 October 1960, Lungi’s life was shaped by the violence and struggle that rocked her community. From an early age, she stepped up as a leader — not out of ambition, but out of duty.

She became involved in politics through the United Democratic Front, the Natal Organisation of Women and the ANC. She was known for being hands-on, always connecting with people on the ground.

During the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal, she served on peace committees, working to protect her community. Her leadership in the ANC Women’s League grew over time. She went from organising door-to-door campaigns to becoming the Provincial Chairperson, and in 2023 she was elected Deputy President.

“Her voice was always calm but powerful,” said the ANC. “She represented a generation of women who fought for justice quietly but with strength. She was never too important to listen or to help.”

Lungi also made her mark in Parliament. She chaired the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises and later led the Portfolio Committee on Tourism. She always demanded that the government do right by the people, but she didn’t do it for recognition — she did it because she cared.

She encouraged South Africans to look after the schools, clinics, libraries and community halls built after democracy. She often reminded people that these were the real results of the struggle.

More than a politician, Lungi was a mother, a mentor and a patriot. Her life showed what true leadership looks like — simple, honest and selfless.

The ANC thanked her family for sharing her with the country. “To the women of South Africa, her life is proof that dignity and power can go hand in hand,” they said.

“Lala kahle, Comrade Lungi,” read the party’s statement. “You led with humility, gave generously and walked the path of freedom with grace. Your legacy is part of our democracy’s fabric.”
