The African National Congress (ANC) has won in the first municipal ward by-elections of 2025.
The elections were held in Ward 24 in Bushbuckridge Municipality in Mpumalanga, on Wednesday, 15
January 2025.
ANC WINS FIRST BY-ELECTIONS OF THE YEAR
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said the party retained the seat it won in the 2021 local government elections, with 74.19% of the total votes cast, compared to 62.10% during the 2021 elections. Voter turnout was 49.44%.
The party closed 2024 with a bang as emerged victorious in the by-elections held in KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape.
In the last by-elections of 2024, in ward 2 in Msunduzi Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC retained the seat it won in the 2021 municipal elections, with 51.36% of the total votes cast, compared to 38.44% during the 2021 elections. Voter turnout was 39.81%.
The party defeated its rivals, the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
In addition, in ward 7 in the Hantam Municipality, Northern Cape, the party won a seat previously held by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the 2021 municipal elections, with 45.68% of the total votes cast, compared to 34.53% during the 2021 local elections. Voter turnout was 48.27%.
