- MKP beat the DA by 22 votes, but the ANC says too many voters were registered at one-room flats.
- MKP supporters danced and sang after the win, calling it a big moment for the new party in Durban.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is not happy after the MK Party (MKP) won its first by-election in eThekwini.
MKP took Ward 110 from the DA, and the ANC says something is not right.
They say 135 people were registered to vote at a one-room flat at 1 Mount Moriah Drive. At 2 Mount Moriah Drive, 79 people were registered. And at 9 Mount Moriah Drive, 89 people were registered, but the ANC says that address doesn’t even exist.
“It is highly unlikely for a one-bedroom flat to house 135 individuals. Most disturbingly, 89 individuals are registered at a non-existent address,” said the ANC’s KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson.
The ANC says it respects the election result, but has filed a complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission and the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
MKP members were celebrating from the early hours of Thursday, singing and dancing to struggle songs after hearing the results.
The party made history by winning Ward 110, which includes Mount Moriah, Phoenix and uMhlanga.
The DA used to run the ward but lost it after removing its councillor.

MKP’s Mandla Biyela beat the DA’s Rowena Bosman by just 22 votes. The ANC got only 900 votes.
Other parties in the race included the Economic Freedom Fighters and the National Freedom Party.
