- SACP to contest against the ANC in next municipal elections.
- Having lost a chunk of its voters to the EFF and the MK party, the ANC fears the SACP will take more of its supporters.
The ANC has rejected the SACP’s plan to contest the 2026 local government elections on its own.
ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula said the ANC bosses were still trying to convince the SACP not to go it alone.
“We need to re-examine their decisions and do everything possible to undermine a decision that would have dire consequences for the alliance,” he said.
For the past 30 years, the communists contributed to funding the ANC election campaign and campaigned for the ANC in national and local government elections.
The SACP also contributed intellectual capacity to the various manifestos of the ANC.
In return senior members of the SACP would be invited to the cabinet as ministers, or become MPs, premiers, members of provincial legislatures and mayors.
All this without their party getting a single vote or a mandate from the voters.
Almost like parasites on the ruling party, SACP members earned huge salaries and have continued to do so under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s reign.
The two allies enjoyed this mutually beneficial relationship until the SACP and Cosatu started to dictate to the ANC what its policies should be.
Submitting to Cosatu and pursuing the SACP agenda of socialism have resulted in low investor confidence in the South African economy and tough labour laws that make it difficult for employers to hire and fire employees.
The latest monthly minimum wage of R4,500 is making it difficult for unskilled workers to enter the labour market, especially in the agricultural sector.
At the heart of the fallout is President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inclusion of the DA in the Government of National Unity.
Having lost a chunk of its voters to the EFF and the MK party, the ANC fears the SACP will take more of its supporters.
